If you’ve seen any Japanese cinema in the ‘70s or ‘80s, you’ve undoubtedly seen Aoi Nakajima—and if any of those films had nudity in them or involved sex as a theme, your chances have gone up dramatically. With an acting resume that includes 70 feature films, Aoi’s credits include such titillating titles as Sigh (1973), Season of Lust: A Trail of Honey from an 18 Year Old (1973), Carousel Maki: Wet Affairs of the Night (1974), The Bride Was Wet (1974), Beast of Lust (1974), and Virgin Blues (1974)—and that was just in the first two years of her 15-year film career. One of Aoi’s most famous roles was playing Toku in the film In the Realm of the Senses (1976), the story of a woman obsessed with her master and their sexual relationship. The movie, which has held both an X-rating and a NC-17 rating, was an award-winner, grabbing the Sutherland Trophy at the British Film Institute Awards, the Special Jury Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival, along with a couple of others. You can see the enthusiastic and delightful Aoi in several nude moments on screen, involved in some pretty specific sexual acts, as well as some general nudity for the sake of being naked. She’s also very expressive during the act as Izumida in Erotic Diary of an Office Lady (1977). Most of this actress’s movie posters and DVD covers show women in various stages of dress and in compromising positions, and it’s a regular feast for the eyes—not to mention the fun that lies within. Unfortunately, Aoi passed away in May 1991 at the age of 45.
