Much like the Coen brothers, the Safdie Brothers of Uncut Gems fame seem to have gone their separate ways, at least for the time being. The same year Benny Safdie took on the true story of MMA and UFC fighter Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, Josh tackled the tale of a different sort of athlete. Marty Supreme is a fictionalized account that is based on, but not a straight biopic of, real-life ping pong player Marty Reisman. Gunning for awards season like a man on a mission, Timothée Chalamet plays Marty Mauser, a narcissistic table tennis champ in 1950s New York whose low-paying day job is selling shoes. After having charmed a married neighbor named Rachel (Odessa A’zion) into bed, Marty weasels his way into a UK ping pong tournament where he makes it all the way to championship match but loses to Japanese star Endo (Koto Kawaguchi). In order to keep his dream alive and score a rematch, he romances former movie star Kay Stone (Gwyneth Paltrow), who is the wife of a wealthy ink manufacturer (Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary), hoping either one of them can get him out of debt. But will everything Marty and his ego have worked so hard for come crashing down for good when it turns out Rachel is pregnant? We won’t spoil it, but we will reveal that Gwyneth shows up to his hotel room in period lingerie and one of her nipples slips out of her strapless red dress later as he goes down on her in a park. Odessa also has a steamy sex scene with Timmy where he rips off one of her garters to boink her from behind in the shoe store. Chances are good that while watching, you’ll find something supreme in your jeans!
