“Film is like sex,” declares Anna Biller. “Film fulfills all my expectations, all my fetishes.” Well, now. Mr. Skin certainly gives merit to this revelation from the raven-maned, luminously golden-skinned multi-talented chick. Biller is a baller, and sent shock waves through the cult-film world by writing, directing, and starring in her own orgiastic, epic homage to late-1960s/early-1970s sexploitation films. She called it Viva (2007), and hired a shit-ton of people to get naked with her in the flick. She proved her skills as a master behind the camera, and folks praised the 35mm film for its lush colors and female-focused vibes. Of course, Anna didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to shoot a film; first she received a degree from UCLA in art, then got an MFA from CalArts in art and film. Viva was her first feature movie, and her second was The Love Witch, “a hot house filled with deadly and seductive blooms,” according to the New York Times, and “a metaphysical astonishment,” per The New Yorker. In addition to writing and directing her features, she was also the producer, the editor, the production designer, the costume designer, and the composer. And Anna didn’t just shoot visually stunning flicks with naked people—she was one of the naked people herself. She appears topless in several scenes of Viva, shares her soprano voice while wearing a mesh gold bikini with her nipples poking through, and participates in a sex scene that flashes bush, courtesy of an overhead mirror. And, um, she also put her mom and dad in the film, too.
