Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Bess attended the Bryn Mawr School for Girls and Brown University, where she Latin and Theater and appeared in over 100 theater productions. She started her acting career off-off-Broadway and later made her way to onscreen work. Since Bess' debut on the not-quite-a-hit series On Our Own (1977), Bess has been making plain Janes sexy. She's spent the better part of her career on the small screen in such made-for-TV fare as How to Pick Up Girls! (1978) and Christmas Every Day (1996), as well as some theatrical teasers such as Jaws 3-D (1983) and That Darn Cat (1997).
