Thank God for the universal language of skin. If it weren't for the fascination that crosses all borders, a willowy brunette temptress the caliber of Catherine Spaak might not enjoy the Stateside acclaim that she does today. A teen star in her native Italy, Catherine is said to have caught her big break when Sophia Loren spotted Catherine doing an interview about her bit role in Le Trou (1960) and knew she'd be perfect for the lead in Sweet Deceptions (1960). Although Catherine did appear in a few American movies, most notably Hotel (1967) opposite Rod Taylor and Karl Malden, the French-bred Spaak built the bulk of her career in Continental cinema. Many of these European films received only the most limited release in the U.S., and the bulk of them speak in tongues that are alien to our ears. Many haven't held up well to modern norms, like the black and white film Oggi, domani, dopodomani (1965) or "Kiss the Other Sheik" about a man trying to sell his wife to a harem. While you'll think probably "you couldn't make that today" watching it, seeing her dressed in the naughty librarian look and unzipping her skirt to show her French bench cushion in black panties still gets us going a full sixty years later. Una ragazza piuttesto complicata (1968) provided our first look at all Catherine had to offer, with her lying naked on the bed and talking on the phone, before getting spied upon by a weird bearded guy, who stares at her tight, heart shaped heinie. From getting whipped while lying bare naked on a clay tennis court to getting an in depth physical examination from a handsy doctor, all the way to riding topless on a man who carries her around like a little kid playing horsey, the words may not translate perfectly (as if there are any words that would make those scenes rational) but there is nothing foreign about the high-riding chair cheeks and chest peaks of her work in The Libertine (1969). Catherine wears a velcro dress which is quickly removed to display her petit teets in Cat O'Nine Tails (1971) although we never get to glimpse Cat's kitty. And her high-yield striptease from Bruciati da cocente passione (1976) would be a welcome next-door addition to Anytown, USA. Catherine has kept acting, although her appearances have been far more sporadic. Still, we'll always have her large body of pat work to keep us entertained. No matter what era you grew up in, or whether you're from the USA, FRA or ITA, Catherine's sexy body will spaak your interest.
