After moving to Fort Lauderdale when her mother got remarried to Greek-Egyptian land developer named Aristotle Z. Nyad, Diana Nyad started to train as a swimmer under Olympian Jack Nelson, who she later revealed was sexually abusive to her (and other girls) from the time she was fourteen until she graduated high school. She originally wanted to swim in the Olympics but ended up losing speed after suffering from the heart infection endocarditis. After doing more swimming in college, she entered International Swimming Hall of Fame director Buck Dawson’s Camp Ak-O-Mak in Magnetawan, Ontario to train as a marathon swimmer, ended up setting a bunch of records, and then at 61 years old went on to swim the distance between Cuba and Florida, though neither the World Open Water Swimming Association nor the Guinness Book of World Records has officially certified the crossing, even with a renewed investigation sparked by the 2023 film NYAD. The film stars Annette Bening as Diana, and Jodie Foster as her best friend and coach during the events of her 2013 swim. But the most shocking thing of all actually happens during the closing credits, which shows footage of the real Diana and includes a nude pic of her sans-bathing suit.
