The granddaughter of a poet and a sculptress, and the daughter of an actress, is it any wonder Gillian Hills is a work of art? Born in Cairo, Egypt, her father was a traveler, teacher, and author. She eventually wound up in France, and was discovered at age 14 by director Roger Vadim (he did Barbarella), giving her her first acting gig, playing a friend of Cécile in the French flick Les liaisons dangereuses (1959). At 15, she landed the lead role of Jennifer Linden in Beat Girl (1960), a UK film. That same year, she also started a singing career in France, and had several hits. Back on the big screen, we get our first glimpse of the teenager all grown up in her role as “The Brunette” in the English language, Italian and UK collab film Blow-Up (1966). In a romp with actors David Hemmings and Jane Birkin, the three roll around naked, and Jane even reveals kitty, pretty much the first to ever do so in mainstream British cinema. Seemingly always on the cutting edge, Gillian was also bare in the X-rated, iconic A Clockwork Orange (1971), directed by Stanley Kubrick. As the character Sonietta, she’s one of three in a fast-forwarded menage-â-trois scene that became quite famous. It’s quick (oh so quick!), but you can see all of Gillian’s three Bs as they twist and bend rapidly. After 1974, the delicious dish retired from acting to hang out between New York and Great Britain, and to pursue another talent: art. Her work can be seen as illustrations in various children’s books, and on dozens of book covers, including V.C. Andrews’ Flowers in the Attic, and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple. And—and, she’s also married to Stewart Young, the guy who managed AC/DC; Cyndi Lauper; Emerson, Lake & Palmer; Scorpions and Foreigner. Talent attracts talent!
