The daughter of a healthcare worker and a criminal lawyer, Jake studied ballet as a child under the tutelage of Mrs. Betty Carey-Love. But it was acting, not dancing, that most interested her, and after working with acting teacher and voice coach David Smukler, Jake appeared in comedic roles in movies like Devil's Food (1996).
