Slender, simmering brunette June Fairchild was a streetwise waif with gut-wrenching vulnerability and a gleam in her flashing eyes that said she might steal a guy’s wallet as easily as she’d snatch his heart. The deeply tanned and wildly uninhibited Manhattan Beach, California, native was a favorite of the maverick American filmmakers who defined a cool, detached brand of no-strings sexuality that was all the hotter for being so seemingly free. June summed up the gypsy spirit of the times in a bare muff flash that showed her hairy bush and a nymph-like starry-eyed youthfulness in Pretty Maids all in a Row (1971). Her body was willing, able and actualized in director Jack Nicholson’s Drive, He Said (1972).
