Legendary performance artist Marina Abramovic was born in Belgrade, in what is now Serbia, and rose to prominence in the early ‘70s with her Rhythm series, a group of performance art pieces that most famously involved giving visitors a variety of weapons with which to inflict pain and harm on her. Her most famous work was her 2010 piece "The Artist is Present" which was turned into a documentary in 2012. The exhibition took place at MOMA in New York City, and was attended by such notable people as Lady Gaga, whose presence at the exhibition raised Marina's profile among a younger generation. In early 2015, the original entity appeared in the Amazon Original The New Yorker Presents, where she went fabulously full frontal at the age of 68 in various performance pieces! In addition to featuring herself in her exhibitions, she has also directed others for artistic expression. In 2006, she was one of the directors of Destricted, a compilation of erotic films “intended to illuminate the points where art meets sexuality,” with Marina’s segment being “Balkan Erotic Epic,” based on her 2005 series of the same name, a collection of 14 video shorts including Women Massaging Breasts, Single Man Copulating With Earth, Woman with Skull, and Man Masturbating in the Rain. Still in the game in 2021, at the age of 75, she completed the documentary 512 Hours, provoking a group of 21st century gallery visitors. While Mr. Skin is excited to see what the artist has in store, he sincerely and apologetically hopes there’s a condensed version he can peruse…
