Discovered by legendary schlock auteur Ed Wood, Valda Hansen was not necessarily on a rocket ride to fame. She did land in a couple of Wood oddities, including the short, The Night the Banshee Cried (1957) and Night of the Ghouls (1959), her first full-length feature. At the time, Valda was, in her own words, “sweet sixteen and innocent.” That innocence was shucked for the blaxploitation classic Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off (1973) and the R-rated sexploitation of Wham Bam Thank You Spaceman (1975), the busty blonde’s only, but completely revealing, skin onscreen. “We were on this earth,” Valda said of herself and Wood, “but not of it.” When she died in 1993 Heaven got another angel.
