A little history lesson in territories: Königsberg used to be in the German state of East Prussia, which then became Kaliningrad, Russia. All important, because that’s where the six-foot tall blonde goddess of a model Veruschka von Lehndorff was born. A countess by birth, her father was a German aristocrat and a key member of the German Resistance, who was executed when Veruschka was only five, after he was accused of plotting to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The rest of the family was then detained in labor camps until the end of World War II. Eventually, she studied art in Hamburg, then moved to Florence, Italy, where the statuesque female was discovered at the age of 20 and became a model. She hit the runways in Paris, New York, Milan, and London, and appeared on the cover of the US version of Vogue four times in 1965. In 1966, she made a five-minute cameo in Michelangelo Antonioni’s first English-language film, the Oscar-nominated Blow-Up, and garnered so much attention for her almost-bare performance, including a famous shot of actor David Hemmings straddling her after a photo shoot, that she became the unofficial face and body of the film, even more so than lead star Vanessa Redgrave. The film boosted Veruschka’s career from model to super-model, and more magazine covers ensued, including the August 1968 issue of Life magazine, and the January 1971 edition of Playboy. She revealed her bare breasts and a bit of her bush as Barbara in the Greek and German film Milo-Milo (1979), played the Countess in The Bride (1985) with Sting and Jennifer Beals, and Gräfin von Wallenstein in Casino Royale (2006) with Daniel Craig’s James Bond, and in the movie, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel (2011).
