Bikini Beach (1964) harks back to a time in which the bikini was king, or queen, something. It was the harbinger of hedonism that would bloom in the 1960s, and while the movie industry was behind that curve they understood what stuffed a wild bikini was money. Lots of money from the allowances of horny teenagers, who flocked to see Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon in pictures like this one. This movie has it all, except for nudity: surfing, a British rock sensation, Potato Bug, one of the two roles played by Avalon, Don Rickles as a club owner and even a cameo from Boris Karloff. There’s lots of music, including a minor hot-rod music band called the Pyramids and a then-unknown singer named Stevie Wonder. A bit of trivia: Candy Johnson, who was in this and all the beach party movies, was featured in Behind the Green Door (1972), the classic Mitchell Brothers’ porn.
