In the pre-Roe v. Wade world of 1968, a pregnant Joy (Elizabeth Banks) is diagnosed with congestive heart failure and is given a 50/50 chance at survival if she continues with the pregnancy. The only other option is to terminate and in order to get approval for the procedure, she has to sit before an all-male board while they decide her fate, and - of course - they vote against ending the pregnancy. Serendipitously, she discovers the Jane Collective, a group of Chicago women led by Virginia (Sigourney Weaver) running and underground organization to facilitate safe abortions. Eventually, Joy goes from patient to participant and joins the Janes in their mission.
