Cause celebre (1987) is a made-for-TV movie, not from France, as you’d assume from the French of its title, but England. This is a BBC production of a real murder trial that took place back in 1935. Helen Mirren plays the better half of a couple on trial for the brutal murder of her husband. There are two sayings in newsrooms: if it bleeds, it leads and sex sells. This story has both and the press goes nuts or whatever the British equivalent is. This is a courtroom drama, made unusual to audiences on this side of the pond due to the powdered wigs of its magistrates. But it’s what happens outside the courtroom that is what keeps us coming back to this movie, and that is Helen in a sex scene with naked breasts and bum.
