Based on a novel by Manuel Rivas, El Lápiz del carpintero (2003) explores the tumultuous history of the Spanish Civil War period. Tristán Ulloa stars as Daniel da Barca, a doctor exiled to his native Galicia during the war years. Returning to post-Franco Spain, the doctor tries to make sense of a mysterious portrait of a prisoner of the Republic. Antón Reixa’s film deals with history, politics, and memory, but it also finds time for some hot-blooded romance. María Adánez stars as a Spanish vixen who sidetracks the hero with a session in the sack.
