Bad memories are stirred up when a woman returns to her family home after a long absence in Ella's Mystery (2009). As a young woman in Cape Town during apartheid, Ella (Amelie Kiefer) had a forbidden affair with a young black man, Ben (Chumani Pan), and had to give up the resulting child because of the social taboo. In her grief Ella left the country, but 40 years later she makes the journey back to attend her sister’s funeral. Back in the place of her birth, Ella feels a deep connection to the land and decides to embark on a search for her daughter, whom she has never met.
