Part Mexican cartel drama, part telenovela, and all musical - yes, musical - this multilingual film from French auteur Jacques Audiard tells the story of a frustrated defense attorney named Rita Moro Castro (Zoe Saldaña) who helps powerful drug kingpin Manitas Del Monte fake his death, abandon his wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) and their children, and medically transition into a woman - the titular Emila Pérez (Karla Sofía Gascón). Four years later, trouble gets stirred up again when Emilia, ready to atone for her sins, reconnects with Rita in London and enlists her to help move the unsuspecting Jessi and sons from their new home in Switzerland back down to Mexico. As far as nudity goes, Zoe's character gets a glow-up but only goes so far as displaying some poking nips through a silky top. Selena demonstrates her singing chops while parading in panties and teases us by opening her shirt, but then flashes what’s underneath away from the camera. It’s Karla that shows the most skin, bringing out some sexy sideboob before putting on a bra, but that’s the closest we get to seeing Emilia’s pair-ez.
