The French are not entirely like us. Consider our differing approaches to making movies about teens coming into their sexual prime. Judicious helpings of nubile skin are constants on both sides of the Atlantic. But when we Americans make a coming-of-age film, the result is a self-referencing, gleefully vulgar transgression like Not Another Teen Movie (2001). The budding dramatists of France wrap the subject of dawning sexual proficiency in a pretense of high artistry, whipping out story lines befitting a classical Greek tragedy. But keep in mind that the Greeks invented the gratuitous shot of a naked nubile bathing, and Girls Can’t Swim (1999) is replete with scrumptious continental pastries peeling out of their panties to slip into a shower or squat into a tub.
