Most often in Hollywood movies, the chance encounter leads to an improbable but undeniably destined romance. Grand Canyon (1991) takes a different route. In this Lawrence Kasden-directed drama of intertwined human striving and straining, the coincidental meeting of two disparate characters is as likely to result in a spiritual awakening as in a pulse-quickening love connection. Kevin Kline is compelling and sympathetic as the stranded white motorist who is saved by guardian black angel Danny Glover in a rescue that is almost as miraculous as the puffy bump of Mary-Louise Parker’s scanty-pantie-clad muff as she reclines in bed.
