The nature of a career in civil service is to be of assistance to less-able citizens, in fact a noble calling, especially as initially followed by the callow male protagonist of Gun-shy (2003). A grassroots worker in Germany’s social system, this well-meaning youth spends his days delivering food to frail and imperfectly mobile senior citizens. So what if he is only engaged in this altruistic endeavor as a ploy to escape his military service. The boyish fellow may be opposed to the military-industrial complex that he sees as the engine for so much of western society’s destructive nature, but that doesn’t mean he’s chicken. Just look at the gumption he summons when his fixation upon a sultry redhead nymph who has no time for him turns into a compulsion to protect her from entities that perhaps she fails to even recognize as threats.
