It’s the mid-90s, and high schooler Owen (played by Ian Foreman first then eventually by Justice Smith ) goes over to the house of fellow student Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine) late one Saturday night, where she introduces him to a cult TV show for teens that’s part Buffy the Vampire Slayer and part prime time Nickelodeon drama called “The Pink Opaque. It’s a fantasy series about two psychically connected girls who battle a different monster every week sent out by the show’s big bad villain, Mr. Melancholy. Owen and Maddy share a bond over this show over the years, both using it as an escape from the problematic real world, until things seem to come crashing down around Owen one by one - the death of his mother, Maddy running away to escape her abusive stepfather, and the show being unceremoniously canceled. You’ll see more than just the TV glow, especially if you keep your eyes peeled for musician Phoebe Bridgers dueting with a corseted Haley Dahl, as well as some perky pokies from Brigette while in a room with constellation projections. If only the stars weren’t the only things out!
