A loosely autobiographical film directed, co-written, and starring Richard Pryor as both the titular comedian whose backstory seems to echo Pryor’s and the Death-like alter ego walking him through moments in his life after a drug-induced accident leaves him severely burned. Pryor insisted on occasion that the movie was not really about him, but the parallels are hard to ignore, especially the 1980 incident where he was burned while freebasing (which his daughter later revealed to be a suicide attempt). Much like Bob Fosse, who directed the very similar All That Jazz, Jo Jo practically grows up in an Illinois brothel, and we get to see a full-on burlesque routine from a pasty-wearing Paula Kelly. She’s one Satin Doll you’ll be dying to play house with!
