Foreign movies had a fan base large and devoted enough during the 1970s to keep a groovy arthouse grinding away in most medium-sized American towns. The allure of imported cinematic fare such as La Derobade (1979) derives from the fact that its title translates in English to Memoirs of a French Whore. A glance at the cast list reveals that curly-headed, thick-bushed brunette Maria Schneider--whose big, buoyant bouncers; taut, juicy chair cheeks; and rich, thick pelt provided special sexual effects for Last Tango in Paris (1972)--plays the part of a Parisian working girl in La Derobade. The anticipated nudity of Maria Schneider was sufficient motivation to pile into a car and drive down to the local Continental-culture screen.
