Set in 1750 Louis-XV-France, Mon oncle Benjamin (1969) (“My Uncle Benjamin”) is the story of Benjamin (Jacques Brel), a country doctor who is in love with the innkeeper’s beautiful daughter, Manette (Claude Jade). Manette won’t give Benjamin the time of day (he’s a well-known womanizer) until he produces a marriage contract (which sounds way more serious than a diamond ring). After Benjamin is sentenced to prison as a result of a practical joke, he escapes with Manette, who happily and willingly follows.
