We in America are raised to believe that noticing, remarking upon, or being entertained by ethnic stereotypes is inherently evil. Thank God for the Irish innocence and feminine candor of director Theresa Connelly. Connelly’s comically dramatic Polish Wedding (1998) is not afraid to hitch its plot to a common prejudice held in regard to females emigrated from Poland. Polish chicks, the common--as in low--wisdom goes, are blessed with many virtues, chastity and fidelity not being among them. The clan assembling for Polish Wedding is headed by a happily married mother who has been having a long-term extramarital affair and her daughter. The daughter has been knocked up by a cop. The policeman is being pressured to make an honest bride of his pregnant pal, hence the title. Lovers of unabashed human comedy will stay tuned for the sequel--Mexican Divorce.
