Whether due to planned obsolescence, natural wear and tear, or damage from misuse or accident, modern man's machines are continually disappointing him. The situation is grave enough when a car breaks down or a toaster flares up, but what about when labor-saving robots go on a killing rampage, cutting down the very flesh-and-blood masters they were created to protect and coddle? The law-enforcement officer of futuristic message film Runaway (1984) is given the task of troubleshooting these rebel automatons and reducing hard-wired evil incarnate to a bucketful of harmless nuts and bolts.
