Comely, cuddly, and working-class Liverpuddly, Pauline Collins is a charmer who's quietly coming apart at the seams. She's Shirley Valentine (1989), a housewife in the middle of life who wishes there were more to hers than snoresville and chores. She chatters with the walls (the film is based on a one-woman play, after all), enjoying their company more than that of bland-o hubbo Bernard Hill—until one day her old girlbuddy wins a trip for two to Greece, and Pauline takes off for a seriously transformative trip. She jokes to her van driver that she's going for the boning: "Sex for breakfast! Sex for dinner! Sex for tea! And sex for supper!" What a fabulous diet! "It's called the 'F' plan!" she laughs. But once Pauline lands in her destination, the poke jokes turn to real-life hopes of doing the featherbed jig with Hellenic hotstuff Tom Conti. Oh, and she gains some hope and self-love and self-worth somewhere in there too.
