Neil Diamond fans will love this musical biopic based on the 2008 documentary about real-life Midwestern singing duo Lightning and Thunder. Lightning is Mike Sardinia (Hugh Jackman), a recovering alcoholic with a heart condition who works as an impersonator in small-town Wisconsin. He meets hairdresser and Patsy Cline impersonator Claire Stingl (Kate Hudson), who inspires him to focus solely on portraying Neil Diamond and take her along with him as his partner, Thunder. They make a name for themselves in and around 1990s Milwaukee, and their dedication to making it in the music biz is admirable considering all the tragedy life throws at them. Claire loses a leg when a car hits her and suffers from anxiety and depression, and Mike is chronically unemployed and constantly drowning financially, but they find love and form a family with each other plus the kids from their previous marriages. Kate earned an Oscar nomination for her performance and earned a statuette in pants everywhere when she stripped down to her bra and panties just over fifty-five minutes in.
