Eva Victor, the film’s writer and director, is the star of the show as Agnes, a recently-tenured English professor at the same New England university where she earned her graduate degree. Her best friend and fellow alumnus Lydie (Naomi Ackie) is in town for a visit, here to tell Agnes all about married life in the big city and some special news: she’s pregnant. Their warm reunion hints at something gloomy beneath the surface, a traumatic event that has shaped the course of Agnes’s life since it happened. We jump back in time to their grad school days, when Agnes was a star student doted on by her advisory professor Preston Decker (Louis Cancelmi). One day he invites Agnes over to talk about a paper she had written for class, and though we don’t see it, we can pretty much guess at what happens from Agnes’s reaction and her ensuing struggle to move on in the aftermath. In the years that follow, we see her form a relationship with her neighbor Gavin (Lucas Hedges). Though the camera never catches Eva’s best bits, she and Lucas have two steamy sex scenes and a third moment where they are in the bath tub together. She even mentions that her hair is covering her boobs so the lack of rack is a deliberate choice, but you still won’t be sorry you checked out this critically-acclaimed flick!
