In the not-so-distant past, homosexual women were an almost invisible minority. Lesbians kept to themselves, and their amorous adventures were conducted far from the inquisitive eye of the general public. Thank God for progress and The Girl (1999). A stylistic, adventurous film noir set in the girl-loving-girl underground, The Girl brings to light the ambience of the Sapphic sisterhood in all its breast-baring, fur-flying glory. Shot on location in Paris, France, and using French players, the minimal dialogue of The Girl is in English, but the true language of the film is the universal patois of sexual tension and release.
