The title La valle dei sorrisi, literally translated to The Valley of Smiles, also serves as the nickname of the small valley town of Remis where all the residents seem unnaturally happy. It’s especially weird since the village happens to be the site of a horrific train accident that killed forty-six people in 2009. The school’s new gym teacher Sergio (Michele Riondino) is also confused by this. Still dealing with the loss of his son, Sergio doesn’t join the townsfolk in their cheerfulness, and one day local barkeep Michela (Romana Maggiora Vergano) decides to let him in on the secret of “the Angel of Remis.” A teen by the name of Matteo (Giulio Feltri) has the strange ability to take away people’s pain and suffering by hugging them. Instead of intriguing Sergio, the revelation disturbs him, so he does a deep dive to try and figure out what’s really behind this power, becoming friends with Matteo in the process.
