Plans of succession among the retiring executive officers and their subordinates in the typical Cosa Nostra business plan are rarely without bloodshed, intrigue, and at least one great plate of pasta that goes uneaten. In The Last Don II (1998), the heir to the provolone is beset upon all sides by conniving gangster-haters. Blood ties offer no refuge, especially not as embodied by the fiery aunt who has discovered that the new boss of bosses was responsible for the murder of her son. Even the family priest cannot be trusted, not with the way he paws that murderous aunt. The don who came after The Last Don (1997) cannot afford any vulnerability.
