A dramatization of the legendary and tragically troubled French filmmaker Jean Vigo, the aptly titled Vigo (1998) is star-crossed British filmmaker Julien Temple’s tribute to a life that burned bright and short in the service of artistic endeavor. Dead at the age of 29 from septicemia (the clinical term for blood poisoning), Jean Vigo’s handful of surreal movies are infused with a visual poetry that lives on in the works of such pioneering French directors as François Truffaut. Temple’s treatment of Vigo is reverential without pandering and attempts to depict this conflicted creator in all his complex contradictions.
