Four multi-cultural families converge for a Thanksgiving to remember in the frenetic ethnic film What’s Cooking? (2000). Set in Los Angeles, Gurinder Chadha’s lively culture-clash comedy centers on a turkey binge organized by an African-American couple, a Mexican single mother, a feuding Jewish family, and a Vietnamese clan. The participants sit down for their mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie with a dizzying array of familial and cultural baggage in tow, but by the time the plates have been cleared, the characters’ comfort zones have been admirably expanded. More mouth watering than the sweet potatoes are the scantily clad performances delivered by powerhouse actresses Julianna Marguiles and Kyra Sedgwick. But even those pale in comparison to the sultry reveal that hot young newcomer Isidra Vega offers up for dessert.
