Every high-profile veteran hotshot must face the day when age and illness render him susceptible to ambitious rivals equipped with little more than health and youth. Inevitably the legend is brought down by some lesser mortal, but keep in mind the movie is called Wild Bill (1995) and not Punk Kid Pretender. A renowned lawman, gambler, and gunfighter of the Old West, Wild Bill Hickok might have retired to a pleasant routine of East Coast gentility and lived to a comfortable, fame-warmed old age. The only problem was that Wild Bill was the real deal, and an authentic bad ass, even back in the 1800s, never could stand to just lie around and wait for death to sneak up in his sleep.
