Prison movies rarely achieve the lighthearted and sexually sparkling template created by director Robert Aldrich with his classic comedy of macho manners The Longest Yard (1974). The story has been often retold: A dissolute former pro quarterback is sent to the pen and ordered by a sadistic warden to round up a squad of convicts to be slaughtered in a vicious game of football against a better-equipped, better-fed, and meaner-spirited team of guards. Is there ever any doubt as to who will win the game? None. Neither is there ever any lapse in action, chuckles, and wonder at the star-power charisma of QB Burt Reynolds.
